Guess what? We’re diving back into sitcom talk again!
We are all aware that sitcoms produce unique, quirky and unforgettable characters. They carry the heart and humour of the entire series. We recognise certain characters by just the mention of the show names. Yet, all these shows are filled with some underrated characters who silently carried the show. Let's dive into the list of underrated sitcom characters.
Schmidt (New Girl)
Twenty-noineeee! I can literally hear his voice. Schmidt is one of the best characters in the show, and if he is not in one scene, you tend to miss him. Strong characterisation is an important factor when it comes to sitcom characters. Schmidt is a character with multiple layers. His obsessive cleaning, His unique no-boundary dynamic with Nick(his best friend) and his childhood flashbacks are hilarious to watch. On the other side, he loves Cece Parikh (wife) with all his heart, and he never gave up on Nick, no matter what. Though this show is based on Jessica Day( Joey Deshcanel), the new girl herself, Schmidt steals the show.
Doug Judy (Brooklyn Nine-Nine)
Hands down, one of the underrated yet iconic characters in this show. He is not a series regular in the show, yet he shines within a strong set of characters. Though he is a criminal in a cop show, His every guest appearance is an unskippable episode with his unexpected entries. The ironic friendship between Doug Judy( a criminal) and Jake Peralta(a cop) is the main attraction of his episodes. also, Rosa.. rosaaa.
Jacob Hill (Abbott Elementary)
He is a politically informed yet innocent and unapologetically weird character who caught viewers' eyes amidst many iconic characters. Abbott Elementary is a sitcom that takes place in an underfunded school among teachers. Jacob is the only teacher who accepts sarcastic comments from students and keeps going like nothing happened, which makes him hilarious and oddly pure. It also shows that he always puts his students first in all situations. His dynamic with Gregory needs a special mention.
Jay Pritchett (Modern Family)
Phew! This is the hardest choice to make. But I have to go with Jay Pritchett. I always love watching the arc of flawed characters changing themselves as the seasons go by. Jay Pritchett is the patriarch of the house. He is shown as an emotionally closed character in earlier seasons, who changes into an amazing father, husband, and grandfather as the season progresses. He always puts his family first and shows his love in his own way, which makes viewers attach to this character.
Judge Gen (The Good Place)
Yes, Janet and Jason are underrated characters, but Judge Gen steals every scene. It is played by the iconic Maya Rudolph. Need I say more? She is hilarious and adds to an already amazing cast of this show. She’s a cosmic being in charge of dividing people into the Good Place and the Bad Place. Her delivery, timing, and total randomness make her one of the funniest parts of an already brilliant show.
There are also some special mentions like Gunther from Friends, Winston and Coach from New Girl and so on. Honestly, it will be a never-ending list.
Who would you add to this list?
