3 Places I’d Take You to Eat in Sungai Petani

Having grown up in Sungai Petani, there’s always a sense of comfort when I return. The breeze feels lighter here, maybe it’s the fewer traffic jams (no shade to Penang!)

Whenever I’m away, the one thing I miss most is the food here. It never changes, yet it never fails to hit the spot even after months away.

I'd like to introduce you to some of my must-visit restaurants in Sungai Petani.

McDota

This local fast food restaurant is timeless. If you grew up in Sungai Petani, chances are McDota is part of your childhood. The moment you step through the door, the aroma instantly brings back old memories. Anyways,as one of the oldest eateries in town, McDota has earned its legendary status for its crispy fried chicken. Their fried chicken menu comes in fun sets with names like Lucky Plate, Happiness Plate, and Snack Plate, small touches that make customers feel special.

They have many other dishes in this restaurant, which will make you come back to this place. In my opinion, they have hands down one of the best beverages in town. And here’s my pro tip: order the Milo Ais or Watermelon Juice. Trust me, they’re easily some of the best drinks in town.

Opening hours: 11:00 am - 9:00 pm (Monday closed)

Location: No 4, Jalan Bank, Sungai Petani, Kedah

Pallet Cafe

I love the idea of dressing up and going to a nice cafe with loved ones. Something about the ambience and good food, and conversations puts us at ease. I found Pallet cafe through one of those cafe searches, and I was impressed. I loved the wooden cafe concepts and the glass tables that are see-through. It was perfect for me to sit around with my talkative friends.

Now, to the main part, they have a variety of food on their menu, starting from western food, rice items, noodles and tasty beverages. I looked at the menu for a few minutes and ended up ordering my usual cafe order, Aglio Oglio. It was perfectly cooked with lots of mushrooms. Their chicken chop is worth trying.

I would recommend Pallet Cafe for some good food and laughs.

Opening hours: 12 pm -11 pm

Location: 162, 1st floor, Jalan Lagenda 6, Lagenda Heights, 08000, Sungai Petani, Kedah

Pu Ti Zhai Vegetarian Restaurant

This is for my fellow vegetarians. Apparently, I used to sit in baby chairs in this restaurant. I will never know. But I do know that I have been coming to this restaurant for many years. The food still tastes amazing. I am a fan of their Beancurd Claypot. You can simply eat it with rice and call it a day. If you need something spicy to eat. You can try their sweet and spicy vegetarian mock fish. I especially love the kuah. I have noticed people ordering extra rice in this restaurant. You can choose the size of the extra rice from small to large mangkuk. I love that they have the option.

Note: They do not add Garlic and Onion. So if you are looking for such a place, this is a perfect restaurant for you.

Opening hours: 11am -2pm , 6pm-9:30pm

Location: 10, 11, Jalan Dua, Pusat Perniagaan Pekan Lama (at Jalan Sekerat), Sungai Petani, Kedah

Sungai Petani may be a small town, but its food scene carries big flavours and timeless memories. Whether you’re craving fried chicken, a cosy café vibe, or hearty vegetarian food, these three spots are worth adding to your foodie map.

Let me brainwash you into watching sitcoms

“I declare bankcruptcyyyy”  If you read that in Michael Scott's voice, then you are one of us, a sitcom lover. I started watching Sitcoms when I was in University. A Friends scene popped up on my YouTube recommendations. Ironically, I watched the finale first. But it was so funny and oddly comforting that I went back and binged all the seasons. Since then, I’ve fallen deep into the sitcom rabbit holes.  There is something about watching sitcoms which creates a safe and calm feeling. It will give you an instant feeling like you are included in something warm and pleasant. I believe this is the reason for people to rewatch the same sitcoms many times. Let me give you a few more reasons why you should start watching sitcoms. They are relatable I believe everyone has the urge to feel included, and sitcoms are best at doing it. Remember when Monica asked, “Do you have a plan?” and Phoebe responded with, “I don’t even have a pla ...”? It was hilarious and validating. It remin...

Tengah healing ke tu? A needed escape to Gunung Jerai

Sometimes all we need is a different perspective.  We often get caught up in routines and forget why we push ourselves so hard. At the core, it’s to live the life we dream of. And that takes effort, discipline, and sometimes, a bit of healing. I recently took a long-planned, but impromptu trip to Jerai Hill (Gunung Jerai), which allowed me to relax and stay mindful in the present moment.  To be very honest, I just wanted to escape from the scorching hot weather recently. Malaysia is filled with famous hill stations, and Gunung Jerai is an underrated one. Let me just walk you through everything I loved about Gunung Jerai.  Buckle up! (No, really) Like any hill destination, you need to drive through the beautiful greenery, which makes you think about what else is beautiful you haven't witnessed yet in life. The roads are well-maintained, and there are clear horn signs along the way. It’s a drive that asks you to be both careful and present, watching the road while soaking i...
